"Eaton Canyon Sycamore" ©

This morning I headed out to Eaton Canyon to meet up with the Thursday Morning Irregulars to paint. I have missed their friendship and good humor more then I realized, it's been a while since I have been able to participate. I am including two photographs, the photo on the bottom is inaccurate with light catching the paint and washed out darks, the photo on the top is what the painting looks like sitting on my studio easel and is more accurate. This is a very clear example of how the photography can kill a painting.

Oil on Linen, 8" X 10"

Interesting... They almost do look like different paintings... although I like each for different reasons. (I see the nice brushwork better with the "poor" quality photo.)
How was each one lighted?

Hi Marian, The lighting was the same for each. The distance I was standing from the painting is the only difference. What is disturbing is that there isn't one bit of "white" paint on that canvas, and in the poor photo the bark on the trees looks really brilliant white. The poor photo does not look anything like the real painting, and so often that is the case. This time I decided to "air" my frustration. The best part was just taking the day off to paint whatever struck me, rather then the commissions, or the South Pasadena landmarks. Thanks for letting me "air" some more.
